I love this sun tanner. It's great to mix with the lotion of your choice. It has a bronzer in it as well as a tanner, so you can see where it is and isn't as you're applying it. It's very dark, so it lasts a long time, too.

I received this lotion in the mail last month and was very excited to try it out. I applied the lotion after taking a shower like it recommended. I LOVE this sunless tan lotion! It does not smell like usual sunless tanning products. The only CON I found was that it leaves your hands brown after applying, but washes away with soap and water. I tried using gloves, but I did not think it applied as easy and as smooth with them on. Definitely recommend it.

This product definitely gets it right on three major counts - great color, looks absolutely natural without the orange-y, rusty cast just about all other self tanners give me, and I've tried a number of them from the highest to lowest end. Amazingly, it has absolutely zero self tanner smell, from the time you put it on through the entire "baking" process. I can't imagine how they managed this as there is no heavy masking scent either, just a very light hint of almond. Next, it does not streak or leave "hard" edges as some tanners can when you go too dark and see the line of demarcation between the color and your actual skin tone. The price is great too. Applying a special formula of chemicals to the skin to get the effect of a traditional suntan, without any exposure to sun or UV light, is known as sunless tanning. Self tanning and airbrush tanning is a rapidly expanding area in cosmetic sales.
Self tan can be applied in a number of ways, and can come in the form of sprays and lotions, amongst others. The change in skin color is not a result of sun or UV exposure, but rather a result of a reaction between amino acids on the surface of the skin, and Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which is the active ingredient in the formula.
It is made for home use, although anyone that has not used self tan previously is advised to do a skin test before use. This can be done by applying a small amount to a little area of skin, then wait a day to make sure you are not allergic to the ingredients, before applying to the rest of the body. For the best result, apply to clean, dry skin and allow to fully absorb into the skin before bathing or getting wet.
Not all sunless forms can be done at home. An airbrush tan is usually performed by qualified professionals, using special designed equipment made for the application of self tan.
Bronzed skin tends to be linked to health and physical attractiveness, but in previous centuries, most preferred fair skin. In the Elizabethan and Victorian eras, the upper classes would protect their skin from sun exposure. A tan was seen as something for the working classes, who spent a lot of time doing outside labor. The Greeks and Romans were also known make their faces whiter using chalk.
It was in the twenties that the tan started to become fashionable, after a well known designer returned with a tan after a holiday cruise. The tan began to reflect the laid back, luxurious life, not the sign of a life of labor that it once was. It was also at this time that women began to dress more freely, influenced by the Jazz Age. The fact that clothes no longer covered the whole body only gave the tan more appeal.
The first self tan came as a brown or cream dye in the fifties. The older self tan products were not as advanced and natural looking as many are today. The originals used to give a very orange color and patchy finish but new ingredient combinations have helped this.
A lot of people believe that beauty, health and wellness are associated with tanned skin, so therefore feel better with a tan themselves. Health authorities then found a link between sun or UV exposure and skin cancer, which did not completely deter people from wanting a tan, but did support the idea of sunless ways.
Health experts do recommend the use of self tan as an alternative to a regular tan as there are not any known risks to the skin form using sunless tanning methods. Users should always consider that most self tans provide very low protection against UV, and remember this if leaving skin exposed.
More recently, we are once again starting to see paler faces in our fashion and screen icons, so after decades of popularity, the tan may finally be starting to fade.
