Tanning Foam

How To Properly Apply Tanning Foam For The Best Results Sunless tanning is the best alternative for those who wish to have a gorgeous, bronze skin tone year round without the harmful and aging effects of the sun. With so many sunless tanners available on the market, it can be overwhelming for consumers to decide which one to buy, the lightweight tanning foam formulas are a good choice. This particular type of sunless tanner is also known as 'mousse' and is very similar in consistency to the hair styling product with the same name and comes with a spray-pump dispenser as well. Users appreciate this foam because it is light, making it easy to apply evenly. It blends into the skin naturally which makes for a streak-free application.

In order to obtain the best possible results from the use of a sunless tanning mousse, it's important to know how to apply it correctly. The first step is to make sure one has all necessary items assembled for the application, this includes the tanning product, an exfoliating scrub, tanning mitt, long-handled sponge applicator for the back, blow dryer, tissues, petroleum jelly, hair tie, and a mirror. A proper application should take about an hour's time, so it's not something to do when in a hurry.

Prepping the skin involves shaving any area where the tanner will be used, and exfoliating the skin all over with a scrub to remove dead skin cells. Tanning mousse will work best on skin that is clean and free of dry areas. Thoroughly drying the skin after showering is also important as any moisture will counteract the effect of the tanner.

It's a good idea to rub some petroleum jelly on the eyebrows before applying the product to avoid discoloration. The tanning mitt works well with foam products in particular and will prevent the tanner from discoloring the palms of the hands. After adding a dab of the mousse to the mitt, begin applying the product to the face first, using short, circular motions, covering all exposed areas thoroughly including the ears and neck. Next apply to the legs, tops of the feet, blending it well, arms, shoulders, chest, and abdomen and lastly, using the sponge-applicator, apply it to the back.

Blot up extra tanner on the knees, elbows, tops of the feet, and wrists with a tissue, to ensure that they do not turn out darker than the rest of the body when the tan sets. Using a blow dryer is a good way to help speed up the drying process, and it's important to wait about an hour before putting clothes back on. The best time of day to apply tanner is before bedtime, so the product can work overnight.

Some mousses are tinted with a brown pigment that can rub off since it's temporary, so protecting one's bedding with a towel is recommended. Upon waking and showering, the final results should be apparent. If there are any lighter spots, apply some more tanner, and if there are any darker areas, they can be lightened using ordinary lemon juice.

Although fading is natural as they skin renews itself, a sunless tan can still be expected to last up to one week. Regularly moisturizing the skin can help make the tan last longer. Once the color has faded fully, it is once again time to exfoliate the skin and repeat the entire process.

Very believable color - without streaks or funny smell! from Glastonbury, CT Verified Purchaser
This is the best self tanner I ever used. The color looks totally natural - brown, not the orange look I've had from virtually every other tanner. The brown color guide helps a lot, so there is not streaking whatsoever. My best advice would be to keep washing your hands frequently as you apply the tanner. The first time I used it, I didn't wash my hands until the end and it took me literally ten minutes to get all the rubbed in color off my hands. I also needed to use a pumice. But the good news is my palms had no hint of color on them in the morning, so the pumice idea is actually great. Review posted 6/25/2012.

Very natural looking tan. from Toronto, ON Verified Purchaser
The tan I got was very close to my natural color of a tan. Doesn't have the usual self-tanner scent - smells like almonds. I apply it every other day to maintain the color. Stains hands a lot even if you wash them immediately after and will stain your bedding as well (but washes away without a trace on white sheets). Palms of your hands return to normal color by the afternoon the next day. One bottle lasts for approximately 2-3 weeks with every other day application on a petite body. Review posted 6/16/2012.

Very Natural Tan from Evanston, IL Verified Purchaser
I've tried many 'high end' tanning products and this lotion produces by far the most natural tan. At first I was a bit shocked at how dark the lotion was, but in applying it, the color was a plus because it made it obvious when I was putting too much on one area of skin. I've never bothered to write a review before. This product more than deserves praise. I use it all the time now, even in winter for just a light bit of color. Review posted 11/12/2012.

Very good, realistic color from a self-tanner from Ipswich, MA Verified Purchaser
The best quality of this self-tanner is that it contains a color guide that actually stains your skin (some of it washes off, but part of the color guide remains and is long lasting) and so the color guard tint adds to the DHA self-tanner color...this makes the resulting 'tan' more realistic than a DHA self-tan alone would be. Normally I avoid self-tanners with color guides as they tend to be messy, to stain clothing and look dirty, but this product's color guide actually has a purpose in that it improves the final tan color. That usually isn't the case, especially with most drugstore self-tanners. Also, this product has very little of that unattractive self-tanner scent. Lastly, because the concentration of DHA is quite high, you use less (one or two coats) to get a dark color, but you avoid being orange because of the residual stain of the color guide. The end result is a reddish brown tan color. This is pricey, but will last a long time and a worthwhile investment if you tend to turn orange with self-tanners. Good product!
